Need a new roof but there’s solar in the way? Solar panel removal usually means juggling two companies: a solar crew to take the panels down, a roofer, then the solar crew again, if you can get them back on the calendar. That back-and-forth is how a short project turns into two months or more without solar. Ecogen does the whole remove-and-reinstall for roof replacement ourselves. Our crew disconnects and removes the panels, stores the equipment safely, replaces the roof, reinstalls the system and checks that it’s producing before we leave. Your solar is typically down about two weeks. It works for systems we installed and owned systems other companies installed. If your system is leased, we’ll need written approval from the company that owns your lease before anything comes off the roof. We can help with that as well — just let us know who it is with.

Shorter downtime is not just about convenience. As soon as the system is removed, you are no longer collecting the benefits of your solar. Waiting on a second contractor for the roof, the reinstall, and the inspections can stretch that gap — and that wait can run about an extra $100 to $300 per month in lost generation. Getting panels back online sooner means less time without those benefits, which is why Ecogen’s shorter downtime is usually the better value.

  • Shortest solar downtime

Typically about two weeks from panels off to producing again, versus often two months or more with separate contractors. While panels are down, you are not collecting the benefits of your solar — about $100 to $300 a month in lost generation — so Ecogen’s shorter downtime is usually the better value.

  • Careful removal and storage

We label, disconnect and store your panels, racking and wiring so everything goes back the way it came off.

  • New roof by the same crew

No second contractor to schedule. The roof and the solar are one job with one point of contact.

  • Back online before we leave

We reinstall, re-seal the roof penetrations and confirm the system is producing.

Questions homeowners ask

How long will my solar be off?

Typically about two weeks, because one crew does the roof and the solar. With separate contractors it often takes two months or more. That matters because once the panels come off, you stop collecting the benefits of your solar until they are back on and inspected — about an extra $100 to $300 per month in lost generation. Shorter downtime with Ecogen is usually the better value for that reason.

Can you remove and reinstall panels another company installed?

Yes, if you own the system. If it's leased, the company that owns your lease has to approve the work in writing first. We can help with that as well — just let us know who it is with.

Do I need a new roof to have my panels removed?

No. We also remove and reinstall panels for roof repairs, leaks, critter-guard installs or electrical work.
